Fosfomycin for chronic prostatitis?

Study results were presented at the Interscience Conference of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy 2015 by Karaiskos and colleagues. A series of 20 patients (15 with documented resistance to quinolones) were treated with fosfomycin 3g daily for one week, followed by 3g every second day for a further 5 weeks.
There was an 85% cure rate based on resolution of both clinical symptoms as well as imaging abnormalities, and follow -up after 3 months with cultures and checking for symptoms. Some have commented that a cure may be better defined by no relapses within 6 months, as this is common.
There was also concern that dosing every 48 hours may not provide the trough serum levels required for the minimum inhibitory concentration of most strains of E coli.
