Self-medicate with caution

During a recent measles outbreak in Texas, USA, it was highlighted that there was some concern that children were being given vitamin A as an alternative to vaccination against the disease.
For those already infected with measles, in resource-limited settings, a supplemental dose of vitamin A is routinely recommended for children less than 5 years old, as vitamin A deficiency has been shown to contribute to delayed recovery and risk of complications from measles. Data on its role in resource-rich settings are limited, with some experts recommending administration of vitamin A to children requiring hospitalisation for measles.
As yet, vitamin A has not been shown to be effective in preventing measles and as a fat-soluble vitamin it can accumulate in the body, with resultant toxicity.
