Egg allergy and vaccines

Emerging data in more recent years has suggested that for most vaccines with traces of egg proteins (e.g. influenza vaccine), prior egg allergy is not necessarily a contraindication. A recent retrospective, multicentre cohort study published in February 2025 reported similar findings regarding the yellow fever vaccine. In this cohort of 171 children with known egg allergy (about a quarter had a history of anaphylaxis), the participants had received skin testing for the yellow fever vaccine and then received the vaccine irrespective of the skin testing results. No allergic reactions were recorded. Whilst vaccinators should always be prepared to deal with unexpected, rare allergic reactions it appears that specific precautions in egg-allergic patients may not be needed.
