Rare adverse-effects of finasteride

Both EU and UK medicines regulators have recently mandated the introduction of patient cards into packaging of finasteride which is used for management of both alopecia and benign prostatic hypertrophy. The cards warn of the rare risks of depressed mood, suicidal ideation and sexual dysfunction. Despite a lack of data, the EMA is also extending the patient card requirement to dutasteride as a precaution in case it is a class effect.
