Various committees within the European Medicines Agency have recommended and endorsed stronger warnings and precautions for product information on zolpidem. A review of available data confirmed that benefits outweigh risks, but that the known risks of next-morning decreased mental alertness and reduced driving ability should be minimised.

It is recommended that the lowest effective dose of zolpidem should be taken in its entirety at bedtime with an interval of at least 8 hours before driving or operating machinery. An additional dose or part of the dose should not be taken in the middle of the night. The recommended dose should not be exceeded and other CNS depressants should not be co-administered.
