Bin Zhou, Archie Rayner and colleagues in the Non-Communicable disease risk factor collaboration (NC-RisC) recently published their pooled analysis of worldwide trends over 30 years in the prevalence and treatment of diabetes in The Lancet journal. 

Global prevalence had doubled from seven to 14%, with low- and middle-income countries bearing the brunt of the increased burden. Obesity is a main driver in the proliferation of this non-communicable disease in poorer countries, and treatment is hampered by limited access to appropriate care for many patients.
