New guidelines for the management of drug-susceptible TB in children and adolescents
In September 2024, the National Department of Health published new guidelines for the management of drug-sensitive TB in paediatrics and adolescents, which replace the 2013 guidelines. These guidelines contain a wealth of information including detailed explanations of all the available diagnostic tests and when to do them, the importance of radiological findings and a TB treatment decision algorithm. A shortened 4-month course of treatment is included as an option for some patients with non-severe pulmonary TB or cervical TB lymphadenitis. The decision to stop after 4 months of treatment is based on an adequate clinical response.
