Between 2018 and 2022, a multicentre study was conducted across seven sites in France. Trial participants (females) who were already receiving benzoyl peroxide topical therapy for moderate acne were randomised to receive six months of spironolactone or three months (as per registered indication) of doxycycline therapy.
Outcomes were superior for spironolactone at months four and six. Onset of efficacy was faster for doxycycline. The dose of spironolactone was relatively high and more adverse effects were reported in the spironolactone arm, although they were reported to be well tolerated. This study reinforces that spironolactone is an option for select female patients.
