With statements continuing to emerge in certain circles in the USA regarding safety of medications in pregnancy, a commentary in JAMA Psychiatry reminds us to take a step back and look at the whole picture. Whilst potential teratogenicity is extremely important, untreated disease can also confound associations. Caregivers and their pregnant patients need to make shared and informed decisions specific to each individual case in the best interests of both maternal and child health.
