The American Academy of Neurology together with the American Headache Society recently published new practice guidelines for pharmacologic options for migraine prophylaxis. This is the first update since 2012 and was guided by a systematic review by a multidisciplinary panel. Since then, a new class of targeted therapy has been introduced, namely calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) therapy. In this class erenumab and galcanezumab are available in South Africa. The guidelines cover both episodic migraine and chronic migraine.
