Pyridoxine toxicity
A case report published in the Medical Journal of Australia is a timely reminder that nutritional supplements can also have harms. Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) in particular, if administered long-term at high doses, can result in progressive peripheral sensory neuropathy, with similar symptoms to those associated with vitamin B6 deficiency.
Pyridoxine supplementation is recommended for certain riskg roups as well as for those patients on medications with pyridoxine antagonist activity (e.g., isoniazid, terizidone), but is not routinely needed for well-nourished patients without co-morbidities.
