Shivakumar and colleagues recently published their randomized, controlled, non-inferiority trial comparing aspirin 81mg daily vs rivaroxaban 10mg daily for 5 days followed in both groups by aspirin 81mg daily for another 9 days (knee arthroplasty) or 30 days (hip arthroplasty). Patients were followed up for 90 days for DVT and pulmonary embolism as well as bleeding complications. Aspirin alone was not inferior to a combination of rivaroxaban followed by aspirin and there was no significant difference in the rate of bleeding events.
