Exploring health literacy in middle-aged adults

A study by Vogeley and colleagues explored the prevalence of poor health literacy and self-management of health in patients aged 45-64. Up to two thirds of midlife adults in the USA live with at least one chronic health condition.

 

The results indicated that approximately one third of those studied had low or marginal health literacy. As health care workers this serves as an important reminder that not just our older patients may struggle with comprehension of written materials or recall of spoken information. It is extremely important to communicate medicine-related information in simple and concise terms.
