Nocerino and colleagues, from the University of Naples in Italy, published the results of their study which looked at the efficacy of a particular strain (Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12) of probiotic for the management of infant colic.

It was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial using a probiotic strain with a known genome sequence, thereby ensuring quality of the probiotic. A significant number of infants in the probiotic arm were successfully treated (defined as > 50% reduction in mean daily crying duration). Limitations of the study included manufacturer-funding, the inclusion of infants only less than 7 weeks old and the exclusion of formula-fed babies.
