Primary prevention for aspirin complications

Prof Chris Hawkey and colleagues from the University of Nottingham published the results of their HEAT trial recently in the Lancet.

Based on existing knowledge that peptic ulcers and bleeding in patients on low dose aspirin are often associated with H pylori and conflicting results about whether H pylori eradication is effective as secondary prevention of recurrent ulcer bleeding, they investigated whether H pylori eradication would be effective for primary prevention of bleeding ulcers associated with use of aspirin.

They found a significantly reduced risk of hospitalisation for bleeding ulcers, but that the effect waned over time. Read the full report at SciTechDaily.
