1 December, International AIDS Day: where do we stand?

Each year on the first of December, we celebrate AIDS Day: to shine the spotlight on HIV, celebrate our successes, and focus on where we're falling short. This year’s theme is 'End inequality. End AIDS.'

Our colleagues at Bhekisisa Centre for Health Journalism published a piece by HIV experts from Ezitnsha (Nomathemba Chandiwana, Bronwyn Bosch, Simiso Sokhela and Francois Venter), giving a great overview of where we’ve succeeded – and where we need to focus – in HIV prevention and treatment in ten points:

  1. Current HIV treatment in South Africa is pretty incredible
  2. You can live a long and healthy life if you are HIV positive on treatment
  3. A cure and an HIV vaccine are still some time away
  4. New treatments are around the corner
  5. Exciting HIV prevention options are on the table
  6. South Africa appears to be making steady progress in preventing new infections
  7. Getting your care is becoming easier
  8. Diagnosing and monitoring are now super easy
  9. We’re getting better at tackling opportunistic infections
  10. Keep an eye on living long and well
