Predictors of the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa

An interesting observational study analysis was recently published in Nature Medicine, reporting that initial predictions of the effect of the pandemic on Africa, based largely on the transmissibility of the virus, were inaccurate.
The researchers’ findings suggest that better resourced and developed countries In Africa have fared worse, as has been the case globally. It would appear that countries which were rated as better prepared, with more resilient health systems, were in fact worse affected. Higher pre-pandemic levels of HIV also appeared to be associated with worse outcomes.
