Opioid-related adverse events in hospitalised patients

A post-hoc analysis of three retrospective patient record review studies, which included 10 917 patient records, was conducted. Preventability, medication error type, attributable factors and opioid type involved in the adverse event (ADE) were described.
Eight percent (8%) of the ADEs were opioid-related. While the frequency was low, the risk of serious consequences is high. Increased healthcare worker awareness of the potential for opioid-related ADEs is vital.
