Honey for URTI symptom relief
Abuelgasim and colleagues published their systematic review and meta-analysis in BMJ Evidence-based Medicine. A Cochrane review previously found that honey reduced cough severity in children, however its effect on other upper respiratory tract symptoms and in adults had not been reviewed.
Fourteen studies were eligible for inclusion in the review. Combined symptoms scores, cough severity and cough frequency all improved more significantly in those patients taking honey compared to usual care.
There were few placebo-controlled trials, which is an area for future research. The authors concluded that honey could provide a reasonable, safe and inexpensive option for relief of symptoms associated with URTI’s, particularly cough.
