A recent article from the BBC reminds us of the 4000-year history of the use of aspirin as a medication. Recent studies have demonstrated significant benefit for patients with Lynch syndrome (caused by a faulty gene) in reducing both incidence and recurrence of colorectal cancer. Patients with Lynch syndrome have a very high risk of developing colorectal cancer. Proposed mechanisms of action include COX-2 and thromboxane inhibition. Another current RCT is looking at the effect of aspirin on recurrence of other cancers including breast, gastroesophageal and prostate.
